In 2018, Kids Invent Stuff embarked on an ambitious project: constructing a colossal Rube Goldberg machine inspired by children’s inventive ideas. Collaborating with Stream7, the goal was to bring this imaginative concept to life, capturing every intricate detail for their YouTube audience and aiming for a world record.
The Rube Goldberg machine was designed to incorporate 60 unique invention ideas submitted by children across the UK. Each segment represented a child’s creativity, culminating in a complex chain reaction that spanned over 75 meters. The project’s objectives included:
Showcasing children’s inventive ideas in a tangible, engaging format.
Producing high-quality video content for YouTube and potential television features.
Attempting a world record for the most children’s ideas incorporated into a single Rube Goldberg machine.
Capturing the essence of the machine required meticulous planning and execution. Stream7 employed advanced videography techniques to ensure every component was documented:
Utilized a DJI Ronin 2 gimbal system for smooth, dynamic shots while moving alongside the machine.
Deployed multiple camera setups to capture various angles and close-ups of the machine’s operation.
Ensured continuous filming to meet the criteria for world record verification.
Building and filming the machine presented several challenges:
Synchronizing the operation of 60 individual components required precise timing and coordination.
Achieving a flawless run took 74 attempts, testing the team’s patience and resilience.
Adapting to unforeseen issues, such as components misfiring or environmental factors affecting the machine’s performance.
Through perseverance and iterative problem-solving, the team successfully captured a complete, uninterrupted run of the machine.
Post-production was crucial in transforming raw footage into an engaging narrative:
Edited the footage to highlight each child’s contribution, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the project.
Integrated graphics and animations to explain complex segments of the machine.
Produced a behind-the-scenes featurette to provide insight into the project’s development and challenges.
The project’s success was multifaceted:
Achieved a complete run of the Rube Goldberg machine, meeting the requirements for world record submission.
Garnered significant attention, including a feature on BBC’s The One Show, showcasing the machine to a national audience.
Inspired children and viewers worldwide, demonstrating the power of creativity and collaboration.
This project exemplifies the synergy between imaginative concepts and professional execution. Through content creation, YouTube content creation, filming, videography, editing, and video production, Stream7 played a pivotal role in transforming a visionary idea into a tangible, record-setting reality.
Stream7 always produce great quality footage for our YouTube channel but, with the added complexities of the Rube Goldburg Machine, the team really pulled it out of the bag.
