About Project

Working Behind the Scenes at St John’s Waterloo

The Christian Aid Changemakers Conference 2025 marked a key moment in Christian Aid’s 80th-anniversary celebrations, uniting campaigners, supporters, and faith leaders. Hosted at St John’s Waterloo, a historic and active place of worship, the event welcomed 100 in-person attendees while 600 virtual participants joined via a live event broadcast on Christian Aid’s YouTube channel.

Delivering a seamless hybrid experience in a unique location like St John’s Waterloo required careful planning and a considered approach to event production. Stream7 was tasked with providing high-quality event streaming and broadcasting while navigating the challenges of working in an unconventional venue with specific operational constraints.

Solution

A Historic and Active Venue

St John’s Waterloo is not just an event space – it is an active church with a rich history and an important role in the local community. Hosting a live-streamed conference in such a space required sensitivity to the environment, as well as adherence to specific guidelines. Our team had to ensure that all technical setups complemented the setting while minimizing disruption to the church’s ongoing activities.

Silent and Seamless Production During Service

One of the unique challenges of working in St John’s Waterloo was the requirement for our team to operate in near silence while a service took place. This meant carefully planning our setup, ensuring that all movements and adjustments were made discreetly. From positioning cameras to managing audio levels, every aspect of the production was handled with precision to respect the sanctity of the space.

Creative Equipment Placement and Setup

Given the venue’s historical and operational considerations, we had to adapt our equipment placement and installation approach:

  • Non-intrusive setup: Traditional methods such as taping down cables were not permitted, so we devised alternative solutions to secure and route our equipment safely without impacting the venue.
  • Strategic camera positioning: We identified optimal angles to capture speakers and panel discussions while maintaining a low profile in the space.
  • Discreet technical operation: Our technicians operated remotely where possible, ensuring smooth live streaming without interfering with the flow of the event.
Outcome

Connecting Global Audiences While Respecting Venue Limitations

Despite the challenges, our team successfully delivered a high-quality live-streamed event, integrating with St John’s Waterloo’s existing AV systems to enhance the experience for both in-person and online audiences. The conference broadcast allowed Christian Aid to extend its reach, enabling supporters worldwide to engage with discussions and keynote speakers.

By embracing the challenges of working in an unusual location, Stream7 demonstrated its adaptability and expertise in hybrid event production. Our ability to operate seamlessly in a sensitive setting ensured that Christian Aid’s landmark anniversary event was a success.
