What is NDI (Network Device Interface)? Everything You Need To Know

The End of Traditional Cabling

In the past, transmitting video signals required physical cables, such as HDMI, DVI, or HD-SDI. These cables had limitations in terms of length and directionality, restricting the flexibility of video distribution.

The Power of IP Networking

The internet, with its non-linear and interconnected nature, offers a much more efficient solution. NewTek's NDI (Network Device Interface) leverages this technology to share high-quality video over local IP Ethernet networks.

How NDI Works

The concept of NDI is straightforward. A video source, such as a camera, simply sends its signal over the network. Other devices on the same network can then access and utilize this video, as if it were connected directly. This eliminates the need for extensive cabling and complex video switching systems.

Stream7's Experience with NDI

Stream7 has been an early adopter of NDI technology, integrating it into numerous projects. One notable example is our involvement in the Olympus ERCP Masterclass, where NDI facilitated the seamless transmission of multiple video and audio streams over the existing hospital network.

The Future of Video Distribution

NDI and IP video are rapidly gaining traction in the video industry. As more devices become NDI-compatible, we anticipate this technology becoming the standard for video distribution. NDI offers several advantages, including increased power, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
